Ways to Celebrate the Holidays Locally

The holiday season is just around the corner, and Mobile is becoming more festive by the second! As people begin to prepare for Thanksgiving, we know many are already looking ahead to Christmas, and even 2021. So, as you begin to compile your plans for the holiday season, here are some of our favorite ways to celebrate:

Magic Christmas in Lights at Bellingrath

Bellingrath Gardens and Home is proud to be celebrating the 25th year of Magic Christmas in Lights! This Gulf Coast holiday tradition features more than 1,100 pieces, 3 million lights and 15 scenes across the garden’s 65 acres. The one of a kind light show opens on November 27th, and will continue nightly, rain or shine, until December 31st, but it is closed Christmas Day. The Bellingrath Museum Home will also be decorated and open to tours! Snacks are available for purchase and tickets go on sale in November! Magic Christmas in Lights is a family-friendly event and is guaranteed to get everyone in the holiday spirit!

Midnight Mass at Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception

One of the most eye-catching buildings in Mobile is the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. When Bishop Micheal Porter became the first Bishop of Mobile in 1829, he set out to build a cathedral befitting the name. Under the architectural skills of Claude Beroujon, Bishop Porter achieved his dream in 1850, after years of starting and stopping construction. The cathedral holds mass every day, but does a special midnight mass every Christmas Eve to celebrate the birth of Christ. It is a wonderful experience for both visitors and native Mobilians alike!

The Wharf’s Winter Wonderland

The Wharf is famous for their contagious holiday spirit! Every year, the wharf hosts pictures with Santa, ice skating, tree lighting and the North Pole Express. Join them for a magical day full of fun and laughter on any Saturday during November and December! They encourage children to wear their favorite jammies. After the train ride on the North Pole Express, children will be given a candy cane, coloring book and golden ticket! Don’t forget to grab a picture with Santa or a pair of skates afterwards!

Moon Pie Over Mobile

The holidays are never complete without watching the MoonPie drop over Downtown Mobile. Every year, Downtown Mobile welcomes more than 50,000 people on New Year’s Eve for an evening of celebratory activities leading up to the 600 pound electric MoonPie drop, laser light show and fireworks at midnight! There are even shuttle services and special hotel packages. Come and enjoy the celebration at this one of a kind event!

Mobile loves the holiday season and we can’t wait to celebrate it with you! There are so many things to do with your loved ones and so many ways to celebrate the holiday season, so why not celebrate right here in Mobile, Alabama?
