Growing up in Mobile, I can definitely say we have the best bakeries and candy shops along the Gulf Coast! Each store always brings something new to the table. From sammies to “Sherrie Cakes” to candy recipes that have lasted generations, these shops have attracted customers from everywhere, and they all agree on one thing: Mobile knows how to satisfy your sweet tooth!
Three Georges Candy has been serving Mobile the finest southern chocolates since 1917! Located at the corner of Dauphin and Joachim Street, the candy store was founded by three Greek Mobilians named George: George Pappolamporous, George Pope and George Spero. Their original concept was to combine a sandwich shop, a candy shop and a soda fountain to cater something for everyone. Today, the original recipes are still used after being handed down throughout generations. Three Georges Candy is available in their store in-person and online, and candy is made fresh daily.
EllenJAY was locally founded by two best friends, Lauren and Jennifer, who met while training for a marathon in 2008. The two quickly bonded over their love for all things sweet and beautiful. They first worked on desserts for their children’s first birthdays, and thanks to wonderful reviews, decided to pursue their passion together! In Mobile, they quickly became famous for their sammies and other specialty cookies. EllenJAY is located on Airport Boulevard, but you can also purchase their delicious treats on their website or call them at (251)-219-7406!
The A&M Peanut Shop was established in 1947! Specializing in freshly roasted peanuts, candies and southern hospitality, the A&M Peanut Shop has become a must go to for tourists and residents alike. Flour Girls Bakery is home to what is known along the Gulf Coast as “Sherrie Cakes”. The owner and founder, Sherrie Pickett, originally began making cakes out of her home over 15 years ago! For years, the cakes were only available for friends and family, but soon, due to popular demand, Sherrie opened Flour Girls Bakery, finally making her cakes open to the public. The cakes are famous for their rich, buttery taste combining perfectly with the creamy vanilla frosting and the top-secret filling in the middle. Flour Girls also specializes in cupcakes, cookies and pastries! So, next time you get a chance stop by the Flour Girls Bakery in West Mobile and indulge yourself in one of their delicious treats. You won’t be disappointed!
The Moon Pie General Store is located in central downtown Mobile, and remains home to the original, world-famous MoonPies! MoonPies were first created in 1917, and are more popular than ever before, even over 100 years later! When asked to create a snack “as big as the moon”, salesman Earl Mitchell did exactly that. He created the perfect combination of marshmallow, graham cracker and chocolate for five cents, and by 1929, MoonPies were flying off the shelves faster than they could be restocked. Now, Mobile pays tributes to MoonPies every year, as they have become the official snack of Mardi Gras and the city is even known for dropping a MoonPie to ring in the New Year! The MoonPie General Store is now the home to all things MoonPie, selling the famous snack, ice cream and just about anything you can think of! Next time you get a chance, be sure to stop by the store and pick up a MoonPieor try any of their exclusive ice cream flavors!
