Getting Involved with a Local Cause in 2019

New Year’s resolutions. We all make them but come February we haven’t saved a dime or lost a pound. Maybe we fail at resolutions because they are not fulfilling? Change all that by resolving to be more involved in the community! Here in South Alabama, there are many opportunities to lend a helping hand.
Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama
What better way to spend an afternoon or weekend than being a mentor to a young boy or girl? The Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama welcomes anyone interested in making a positive impact on a child’s life.
Mobile Baykeeper
Without volunteers from the community, the Mobile Baykeeper would have a pretty big job on its hands. This nonprofit helps maintain the beauty and water quality of the Mobile Bay Watershed by raising awareness of the conditions.

Waterfront Rescue Mission
The Waterfront Rescue Mission aims to provide assistance to those who may have fallen on hard times. Volunteers can help the ministry by serving meals, providing clothing and using their skills in order to improve the lives of those in need and the organization.
Family Support
Family Support works to enhance the lives of Alabamians with disabilities and their families. Those interested can volunteer their time by serving on the Community Support Council, Board of Trustees or Task Force.
Mobile SPCA
Um, a volunteer opportunity that involves playing with puppies and kittens? Yes, please! Ok, more than just playtime, volunteers of the Mobile SPCA can help the organization in a variety of areas including office help and fostering opportunities.
Feeding the Gulf Coast
This year the Florida panhandle experienced one of the most destructive hurricanes to ever hit the area. Local food pantry, Feeding the Gulf Coast, was right there after the storm helping those with food assistance. Continue their good work by volunteering in their onsite garden or in the food pantry.
Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama
Regardless if you’ve never lifted a hammer, Habitat for Humanity could always use a few more hands on deck. Gather a few of your friends or even organize your coworkers for a day of building a dream home for someone in need.
Ronald McDonald House of Mobile
Make a difference in the life of a sick child and their families by giving your time at the Ronald McDonald House. You can help out by becoming an in-house volunteer or assist families at the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital.
Bras for a Cause Gulf Coast
There is nothing funny about breast cancer, but there is something hilarious about seeing your brother, husband or guy friend strutting his stuff in an elaborately decorated bra. The donations raised during the annual event go directly towards helping men and women undergoing breast cancer treatment.
Instead of writing a check, get out and get involved in any of these notable charities. No matter where you decide you to volunteer, providing help to those in need will be time well spent.
