Fall Decorating, Southern Style

Autumn has finally arrived down here in the South with its crisp air and cooler temperatures. This means us Southerners can now break out our favorite fall décor. No porch, stair railing or fireplace is safe when it comes to fall decorating in the South. Follow along for some of the best ideas to get your home ready for the season.
Pumpkins and Gourds
Pumpkins and gourds are synonymous with fall decorating. As soon as summer ends, pumpkins and gourds will start filling up the bins that were once occupied by watermelons. These fall staples come in all shapes and sizes meaning the design possibilities are endless. No longer just for Jack O Lanterns, pumpkins are becoming the showpiece on Southern porches, tables and entryways.
Usually found alongside the dried husks of corn in the supermarket are pumpkins best cousin, the gourds. These dimply, squash-like little fall fixtures have found their way on Southerners’ dining and entryway tables for years.
Mums and Sunflowers
Mums are the Southern staple of any front porch in the fall. They come in a variety of colors that create the perfect autumn palette. Select coordinating colors and place on the steps of your porch along with pumpkins and other ornamental flowers. Mums also make the perfect accessory for indoor décor as well. Mix and match smaller violet and maroon colored mums with succulents for the perfect autumn-themed centerpiece.
Sunflowers are also in bloom this time of year and add the perfect touch to any fall flower arrangement. These bright and bold flowers can even stand alone in a vase or in a pumpkin that has been hollowed out.
Fall Foliage and Dried Magnolia Leaves
Bring the outside in with dried maple and magnolia leaves. Create a garland with burlap or ribbon and hang on the fireplace or above the front door. Add berries, twigs or small branches to the garland to add more texture. Dried leaves in fall colors such as yellow and auburn make an eye-catching wreath for your front door.
Wreaths
When it comes to decorating with wreaths, there is no limit to the imagination. Anything from grapevines, stalks of wheat, small artificial pumpkins, and leaves can adorn your wreath. If you have a double-door front entrance, hang a wreath on each door with a decorative ribbon.
Rustic Farmhouse Style
Just because you live in the suburbs, that doesn’t mean you can’t have the farmhouse of your dreams. Fall decorating and the trendy rustic farmhouse style goes hand in hand. Add items such as buffalo plaid, tin and shiplap to your already existing fall décor for easy farmhouse chic.
So get your fur-lined boots and yoga pants on and don’t forget to grab that pumpkin latte! Decorating for the fall season in the South can be done quickly and effortlessly with these tips.
