Mobilians are pretty proud of our local cuisine so ergo we’re pretty proud of our local restaurants. When guest visit there are some restaurants we can’t wait to take them to due to years and years of being embedded in the Port City. As such it can be difficult for smaller and/or newer establishments to catch our eye. Here are five though that every Mobilian should try right away.
1. Saisho
Gracing downtown Dauphin St. for a year and a half, Saisho is Mobile’s entrance into the gastropub craze. A mix between American and Japanese cuisine, Saisho offers several different dining experiences. Guests can sit upstairs in a more private setting, outdoor on the balcony or in the open concept kitchen dining room that allows patrons to experience the art of cooking up close. The plates you know infused with the taste you love will have you returning to this inspired new restaurant.
2. Boudreaux’s
The perfect combination of the Gulf Coast and the Cajun cuisine born in the swamps. Folks can call it Louisiana inspired but Mobilians know the taste is just as native to the Delta and Boudreaux’s knows how to serve it up. The restaurant is a family affair and perfect for both families and friends. It’s located on the Eastern Shore overlooking the bay and provides live music on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s. And with the owners’ background in mixology, you can be guaranteed a good time with delicious libations.
3.MoonPie Kitchen
The MoonPie Kitchen is the perfect addition to a downtown that is rediscovering its charm. Located at the bottom floor of the Trustmark building—or more aptly, the building where the MoonPie drops from at New Years Eve—on St. Francis St. the “kitchen” draws more on the nostalgia of an old drug store. The store is filled with MoonPie and Mobile paraphernalia so visitors can browse before sitting at one of the tables for breakfast or lunch. Or if you’re just there for a specialty milkshake, then pop a squat on one of the stools and enjoy a taste of Mobile in its full Carnival glory.
4.Half Shell
Half Shell Oyster House is committed to bringing New Orleans cuisine and flair to the Gulf Coast. Getting ready to celebrate their third anniversary in the Mobile Bay area, Half Shell has found a niche in serving up NOLA on a plate in scrumptious dishes that will have you craving more. There are two convenient locations so Mobile residents can enjoy at Airport Blvd. while Baldwin County residents can visit their Spanish Fort location at the Malbis shopping center.
5.Pizzeria Delfina
This Dauphin St. darling may have pizza in the name but it is a full fledged Italian love letter to pasta, calzones, salads and yes, pizza. Located in the picturesque setting on the corner of Bienville Square, this new addition to a historic building has everything a Mobilian could want in charm while serving up Italian cuisine and pizza in ways that are true to it’s native homeland. The next time you’re strolling downtown around lunchtime, stop into Pizza Delfina for a bite…but get there early; the secret is getting out and you’ll have to fight other Mobilians for a table.
